  • Navigating the Uncharted Waters of (Climate) Change:
A Cross-Country Discussion of Climate Policy Initiatives in Canada and the US

  • About this program:
  • With the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change in place, federal and provincial/territorial governments are now taking steps to implement carbon pricing systems and other climate ‎initiatives with a view to moving Canada closer to its international commitment of reducing greenhouse gas emissions 30% below 2005 levels by 2030. Federal and provincial policies aimed at shifting our economy to a less carbon intensive one will have impacts across a range of sectors. From energy efficiency initiatives and updates to building codes, to the establishment of performance standards for emissions intensive industries and investments in clean technologies and green infrastructure, the path to decarbonization will require careful navigation and strategic business planning. In addition, the change of administration south of the border has added a layer of complexity to an already complex file.

To gain insights into the latest climate change policy developments and trends, join McCarthy Tétrault lawyers, Cindy Vaillancourt, Joanna Rosengarten, Selina Lee-Andersen and special guest speaker Reed Schuler, former Climate Change Agreement Negotiator with the U.S. Department of State, who will discuss the following issues:

    - Highlights of Recent Federal and Provincial Climate Change Initiatives to Implement the Pan-Canadian Framework on Clean Growth and Climate Change
    - Update and Issues Facing the Ontario and Québec Cap-and-Trade System
    - Latest Developments in the Carbon Offset Market
    - Tax Treatment of Emission Allowances and Offsets
    - Carbon Competitiveness
    - Carbon Pricing Trends Around the World
    - View from the U.S. – Update on the State of the Nation
